Economical importance of bryophytes

ECOLOGICAL IMPORTANCE OF BRYOPHYTES

Mosses and Bryophytes are the first organiasms to colonise rocks.
They colonise rock by acidic secretion. This acidic secretion is due to the death of mosses.
When the rock is decomposed it helps in soil formation.
Therefore New soils are formed. The soil act as binders.
It prevent soil erosion. The water retention capacity of the soil is high ie, water holding capacity of the soil is high.
This reduces surface water run-off which prevent soil erosion.
Bryophyte helps in the recycling of nutrients.

ECONOMICAL IMPORTANCE OF BRYOPHYTES.

1) SPHAGNUM

Sphagnum has high absorptive power with antiseptic property.
This can be used to replace cotton in bandages.

2) MERCHANTIA

Mercahntia cures pulmonary tuberculosisand affliction (pain) in liver.
Antibiotic substances are also extracted from bryophytes.
it also acts as antiseptic, and as preservative

POLYTRICHUM

Polytrichum dissolove stone in kidney and in gall bladder.

3) IN RESEARCH

It is used in the field of genetics.Brophytes are the at basic stage of plant evolution. As they ressemble the basics of the plants supportive mechanism in land, they can be extensively used in research activities. Mechanism of sex determination in plant is first discovered in liverworts.

3) PACKING MATERIAL

Bryophytes can act as packing material for fragile goods (seedling) i.e, trans shipment of cutting material such as glassware, bulbs etc.

4) FOODS

Bryophytes have also the nutritional benifits. It provides food for herbaceous mamals, birds and other mammals.

5) AS AN INDICATOR

It act as indicator for acidity and basicity of soil.
When in an area polytrichpous grows the is said to be acidic in nature. Similarly When tortella species grows in the soil the soil is said to be basic in nature.

6) Bryophytes also helps in Peat-Tar (coal) formation. If we can harness the correct approach of bryophytes real potential then we can aslo make bio-fuel. This will help in significant reduction in emisson of freenhouse gases. global warming, climate change and other global issues can be strategically tackled by implementation of such sustainable nature intuned concepts.
