Economical importance of bryophytes

ECOLOGICAL IMPORTANCE OF BRYOPHYTES Mosses and Bryophytes are the first organiasms to colonise rocks. They colonise rock by acidic secretion. This acidic secretion is due to the death of mosses. When the rock is decomposed it helps in soil formation. Therefore New soils are formed. The soil act as binders.  It prevent soil erosion. The water retention capacity of the soil is high ie, water holding capacity of the soil is high.  This reduces surface water run-off which prevent soil erosion. Bryophyte helps in the recycling of nutrients. ECONOMICAL IMPORTANCE OF BRYOPHYTES. 1) SPHAGNUM Sphagnum has high absorptive power with antiseptic property. This can be used to replace cotton in bandages. 2) MERCHANTIA   Mercahntia cures pulmonary tuberculosisand affliction (pain) in liver. Antibiotic substances are also extracted from bryophytes. it also acts as antiseptic, and as preservative POLYTRICHUM Polytrichum dissolove stone in kidney and in gall bladder. 3) IN RESEARCH It is u...

What is PARASEXUALITY, and parasexual cycle

-The true sexual reproduction involving plasmogamy, karyogamy and meiosis is absent.
-means all the events of sexual reproduction occurs in sequence but not at specific timeon the life cycle of the organisms.
- they get benefits of sexual reproduction by parasexual cycle. It is like sexual reproduction as occurance of crossing over like activities without meiosis in somatic cell( cross over in somatic cell in mithai cycle).

-it's different from normal sexual cycle as follows.
a. In sexual cycle nuclear fusion is in the specialised structures, but in this cycle rare nuclear fusion in vegetative structures cell.

b. In sexual cycle one nuclear generation only, but in this cycle it persists through many mitosis.

c. In sexual cycle recombination, crossing over and reduction of    Chromosome onlyin meiosis, but here recombination occurs by rare accident of Mitosis.

d. Products of meiosis is readily recognize and isolated in sexual cycle. Recombination occurs among vegetative cells recognize onlyby using suitable genetic markers.

PARASEXUAL MECHANISM
- When the haploid sets of chromosome of somatic cells are come closer to fuse, then the protoplast first fuse of both hyphey  and the sets of chromosome are select the opposite one and fuse together. As a result diploid a 2n sets of chromosome is formed. During the fusion of chromosomes recombination is occurs between opposite sets of chromosome. Then they Meiotically divide and each diploid sets of chromosome form 4 haploid sets of chromosome.
